Owning an ice cream parlor wasn’t necessarily in Steve Hagen’s plans, but it turned out to be a sweet opportunity that he couldn’t pass up.
A chance conversation, a wish for a small town ice cream parlor and a space ready for the endeavor opened up door after door for the entrepreneur to pursue his new business venture. “I was talking to Ed at the city and said, ‘This place [Blaine] needs an ice cream shop.’ He told me Tony Andrews had already built one. Apparently everyone knew about it but me,” Hagen said.
Fond memories of visiting Daffy’s, an ice cream parlor that used to be the go-to spot in Blaine, spurred Hagen’s decision to explore the business idea. “I had great memories of that, and I wanted other people to have the same experience and memories for years to come,” Hagen said.
“I love Blaine. I’ve lived here most of my life, and I want my four kids to have that experience, too,” he said.
With that in mind, it didn’t take long for Hagen to backburner the other business he was working on and broker a deal with Andrews to rent the little shop next door to Tony’s Just A Bite restaurant. Hagen made some adjustments to the design to get it up to health department standards and lined up Edaleen Dairy as a supplier. “I wanted local,” Hagen said. It wasn’t too much longer before We’ve Got the Scoop was up and running.
Right now, the shop offers eight ice cream flavors. Chocolate and vanilla are the stalwarts, while the rest are rotated on a weekly basis. “We’re definitely going to be getting seasonal flavors,” Hagen said. “We offer most drinks, too, such as floats, milkshakes, Italian sodas, chai, tea and espresso.” Eventually, if space allows, Hagen wants to increase the number of flavors to 12.
Hagen is excited about the coffee, too. He’s keeping it local with Fidalgo Bay Coffee Roasters, and offering espresso to keep customers happy during the dreary winter months that will soon be upon us. “I love my espressos,” he said. One of the specials on the menu is a dessert that mixes the best of both worlds – a shot of espresso poured over a scoop of ice cream.
We’ve Got the Scoop is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, and Hagen is considering expanding the hours depending on the community’s response.
“I’m open to if it become a huge hit,” Hagen said. “We may open later for football or basketball games or move to seven days a week.”
