The next time you head to Bellingham to shop, remember to BYOB (bring your own bag).

Bellingham’s plastic bag ban went into effect Wednesday, August 1. The single-use plastic carry-out bags that have been provided by retail stores are now prohibited.

According to proponents, the measure will “reduce litter and unnecessary waste, protect water and wildlife, and save money by reducing the use of plastic bags.”

Stores will still provide paper bags, but customers may be charged for them. The ban does not include bags used for restaurant take out or for meats and produce in grocery stores.
