The Blaine High School wind ensemble, led by Bob Gray, will perform in Japan’s Funabashi Music Festival in 2013, a festival they have been invited to three times before. Blaine’s band is one of just a few North American groups to attend the annual festival. Photo courtesy of Linda Hughes.
The Blaine Performing Arts Center will host a comedy troupe from Bellingham to raise money for the Blaine High School Wind Ensemble’s 2013 trip to Japan.
The Upfront Theatre troupe will perform at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, with all ticket proceeds benefiting the wind ensemble’s trip to the 2013 Funabashi Music Festival in Japan. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Pacific Building Center and from Blaine band students.
Linda Hughes, one of the organizers for the fundraiser, said the 2013 trip is especially significant because the upcoming music festival could be the last one if new organizers in Japan for the event are not found.
Only one international youth group is invited each year; this will be Blaine’s fourth trip. This year also marks the festival’s 20th anniversary.
“Blaine high school will not only be representing the U.S., but representing North America,” she said.
Blaine’s wind ensemble was the first U.S. school group to be invited to the festival. The cost of the trip is estimated at $3,000 for each of the wind ensemble’s 55 musicians.
