Sailboat racers from across Whatcom County will be competing in a sailing regatta that starts next Monday in Australia.
Being held in Port Stephens, known as the blue water paradise, the 2012 Pacific Rim Regatta will bring hundreds of sailors from around the world to the annual regatta. The race began 22 years ago in Bellingham as an offshoot of the Goodwill Games held in Vancouver, B.C., according to Carol Veach, the president of the Bellingham Sister Cities Association, one of the organizers of the regatta.
“Bellingham is very pleased to send a competitive team of sailboat racers and cultural ambassadors to represent our community in one of the most prestigious events for our sister cities,” Veach said.
Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce president John Gargett is in Port Stephens and blogging on the race. His commentary can be found at www.pacrim.byc.org. Bellingham will be the host city for PacRim 2014.
