Birding festival essay contest offers cash prizes to students

Wings Over Water NW Birding Festival (WOW) along with the Tutor Doctor and Semiahmoo Ladies Club are sponsoring an essay contest as part of the 10th annual festival to be held on Saturday, March 17, at the Blaine Middle School and Performing Arts Center.

The festival provides the opportunity to experience a wide variety of bird species that visit this pristine area on their spring migration. The event is filled with informative, educational and entertaining activities for all ages. The winning essays will be on display at the festival and used to illustrate the importance of waterfowl management and conservation.

The essay contest is open to Blaine public school and home school students.

attending grades 7 through 12. The top three student winners from the two contest categories, 7th to 9th grades and 10th to 12th grades, will be awarded cash prizes of $150 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place.

To enter, students may download the Essay Contest Rules and Entry Form from the Wings Over Water NW Birding Festival website at or get from the Blaine Middle School or Blaine High School administrative offices. Students must submit their completed essays by March 5, 2012, at 5 p.m., to Blaine City Hall, Attn:
