A 20-year-old Blaine man was shot in the torso Sunday evening as he was leaving work at the end of his shift at the Golden Nut Company on Odell Road.
At about 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 4, Blaine police responded to a report of a shooting in the nut processing plant’s parking lot and found the man being tended to by his coworkers, Blaine police chief Mike Haslip said. The man told police an individual sitting in a parked car in the parking lot shot and him then drove off. The suspect is not an employee of the Golden Nut Company.
Haslip said the victim’s name could not be released because police do not have a suspect in custody. While police are relatively certain the shooting was not random, Haslip could not speculate on any motive for the shooting.
“We probably won’t know the [suspect”s] motive until the [suspect] tells us,” Haslip said.
The victim was taken to St. Joseph hospital in Bellingham and released following treatment of his wound. No one else was injured as a result of the shooting.
Haslip said police are following up with several persons of interest, but could not comment further on the investigation.
