It was only fitting that John Liebert receive a Blaine Builder Award on Youth in Government Day, a program that he established in 1996. Liebert, a Blaine City Council member since 2000, will be retiring at the end of 2011 after serving as both a city council member and mayor of Blaine.

Liebert graduated from Blaine High School in 1959. He taught in North Dakota for 23 years after receiving his teaching degrees. Liebert moved back to Blaine in 1987 to teach social studies and coach Blaine’s high school football team.

In addition to establishing Youth in Government day in 1996, Liebert was also instrumental in organizing trips to Washington, D.C., most of which were supported by donations. Liebert retired from full-time teaching in 2000.

Liebert counts hiring city manager Gary Tomsic and working toward construction of the Lighthouse Point Water Reclamation facility as some of his most signifcant accomplishments as a city council member.
