Law enforcement throughout Whatcom County will be on the streets from November 24 through January 2 in search of impaired drivers.
Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden and Western Washington University police, the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol have all committed extra patrol hours to enforcement efforts during the holiday season.
Last year during the same period, law enforcement in the county on routine and extra patrols arrested 151 people for driving under the influence.
In 2010, 188 people died in Washington as a result of an accident involving a drunken driver. The ongoing emphasis on education and enforcement is part of the state’s traffic safety plan to reduce that number to zero by 2030.
