Former Lynden mayor Jack Louws will compete against state senator Doug Ericksen (R-Ferndale) to be the next Whatcom County Executive after the latest primary election results widened Louws' lead against his closest competitor, former county planning director David Stalheim.

The Whatcom County Auditor's Office finished its most recent ballot count at about 4 p.m. on August 18. Louws has now secured 12,182 votes, 28.44 percent of the vote, while Stalheim has received 11,418, 26.7 percent of the vote.

Louws now has 764 votes separating him from Stalheim. The county auditor's office estimates only 200 votes remain to be counted, so Stalheim has no chance of closing the gap even if all 200 went to him.

The county auditor will certify the elections on August 31. The next ballot count is scheduled to happen August 25.
