Volunteers and other workers removed nearly three tons of firework and other debris from the beaches of Birch Bay on July 5.
Birch Bay Steering Committee co-chair Kathy Berg said the 2.7 tons of garbage filled a 30-yard-long garbage bin nearly to the top. More than 20 volunteers plus a women’s work crew from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office spent most of the day returning the beaches to their pre-Fourth-of-July state.
The Whatcom County Solid Waste Division paid for the garbage bin, which was provided by Sanitary Services Company.
