A gun accident east of Birch Bay over the weekend sent an 11-year-old to the hospital with a gunshot wound.
The boy and his grandfather were target shooting in the 7900 block of Ham Road at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, when a gun the grandfather was handling accidentally went off, Whatcom County sheriff’s deputy Beth Larson said. The bullet from the .22-caliber pistol struck the boy in the abdomen.
Sheriff’s deputies and emergency crews responded after the boy’s grandfather called 911. The boy was taken to St. Joseph Hospital for surgery, and no further information is available. Larson said the boy’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
