Bicyclists and pedestrians who travel along Peace Portal Drive will have a safer path to follow if Blaine City Council approves a construction contract for a paved walkway next month.
Blaine planning commission members voted Thursday, June 23, to recommend a 10-foot-wide asphalt trail along Peace Portal Drive from Cherry Street south to Bayview Avenue.
The new path will allow safer travel for bicyclists and pedestrians. The project is a joint effort of the city and Northwest Park and Recreation District 2.
Blaine planner Alex Wenger said the project will cost an estimated $200,000, and it will be entirely funded through state and federal grants aimed at improving nonmotorized transportation. It will also feature sidewalk and driveway improvements and will meet ADA accessibility requirements.
“It’s going to be really nice,” Wenger said. “We’re really excited about it.”
Wenger said the path could be completed as early as September but still needs final approval from city council.
