A Blaine woman drove her car into a ditch Sunday evening and allegedly assaulted a Washington State trooper who responded to the accident.

At about 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, 56-year-old Susan Cavers drove into a ditch in a Dodge Dakota pickup truck, state patrol public affairs officer Keith Leary said. The accident took place in the 5500 block of East Shoreview Road, near the Birch Bay Village development. Officers suspect the truck, which was registered in Oregon, was a rental.

When a state trooper arrived on the scene, Cavers, who appeared to be intoxicated, allegedly hit the responding officer in the face as the trooper was trying to get her out of the truck, Leary said. The trooper attempted to restrain Cavers and called for backup. Cavers sustained an injury to her hip and had to be transported to St. Joseph hospital. No one else was involved in the accident.

Once Cavers is out of the hospital, officers plan to arrest her on suspicion of driving under the influence, Leary said. Troopers also took drug evidence, suspected to be mushrooms, from the truck.
