Citing health issues, Birch Bay neighborhood deputy Cliff Langley is going on leave for an extended length of time.

Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo announced plans to assign a new deputy to the community in addition to scheduling more traffic deputies to patrol the area.

“The neighborhood deputy program has gone a long way toward protecting the Birch Bay community,” Elfo said.
“I intend to fill the gaps in coverage created by deputy Langley’s absence. Once we know more about deputy Langley’s situation, we will determine when he will be returning to Birch Bay or whether another deputy will be assigned on a more permanent basis.”

Langley has been Birch Bay’s neighborhood deputy since 2007 and was the original deputy assigned to the community. Before that, he initiated the neighborhood deputy program in the Kendall-Paradise area.
