Many wonderful things happen during the month of May. More sunshine, right at the top of the list, refreshes the spirit and renews the mind.

Blaine Senior Center folks welcome the refreshing of mind and spirit and look forward to  myriad pleasurable indoor and outdoor activities. There will be  picnics and interesting field trips, Bocce ball and pleasant outdoor walks.

Springtime High Tea fundraiser Sunday, May 15,  from 1 to 3 p.m. with Jim Freeman, music, delicious goodies, prizes and a silent auction. Always there are nourishing lunches and fellowship with friends and new friends to meet and welcome.

Thursday, May 5:  Come celebrate Mother’s Day with our Cinco de Mayo party. Reminisce with musical duo Alan and Carol Linde. Enjoy ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s favorites, vocals, guitar and fiddle.

Monday, May 9: 10 a.m. Blaine Senior center board meeting; 11 a.m. memory awareness screening,  a non-invasive screening that takes only a few minutes. Sponsored by the Alzheimer Society.

Wednesday, May 11: 12:30 p.m. Bingo.

Friday May 13: Zumba gold class begins at 9 a.m. for four weeks. Registration through the Northwest Parks and Recreation District is $32. This class is like a Latin dance inspired fitness party designed especially for seniors.  

Monday, May 16: Balance training and fall prevention meets 1 to 2 p.m. Monday and Wednesday for four weeks. This is $30 per person. Stu Currier is the instructor. Classes stress the need for strong, flexible legs and regularly practiced balance drills.

Tuesday, May 17: Lunch program veterans’ benefits:  Paul Wentand, Service Officer American Legion Post 7 and Greg Brethour present a program on important veteran’s benefits including assisted living, burial and medical card information.

Thursday, May 19:  10:30 a.m. Bocce ball. 11:30 a.m. Lunch picnic at Peace Arch Park. Join us for our first picnic of the season at the  Peace Arch. Howard and Sandy Andreason will provide music, country favorites and more. Enjoy cake and ice cream for our birthday lunch.

Friday, May 20:  5 p.m. World Tai Chi Day 2011 Celebration Party: The public and members are invited to attend a demonstration/performance of Taiji-quan, Taiji sword, Taiji Fan, Talji Rouli Ball. A potluck dinner follows.

Saturday, May 21: 8-11 a.m. Pancake breakfast with pancakes, waffle, French toast or biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage, coffee and orange juice. Adults $5, children $4.
