Lincoln Green Garden Center at 5087 Lincoln Road will host a grand opening celebration Saturday, April 23.
A local couple recently opened a new gardening business in the former Birch Bay Garden Center.

Mike and Christie Peetoom, of Birch Bay, along with two other business partners, opened Lincoln Green Garden Center at 5087 Lincoln Road in Birch Bay on April 1. Mike is also the owner of Peetoom Construction in Birch Bay.

They started the business along with Toby Rubner, owner of Toby The Tree Guy, tree removal service in Bellingham, and Angela Monahan, a helicopter pilot and hobby gardener of Skagit County.

Christie, a dance instructor in Lynden, said the couple was looking for new business opportunities when they decided to purchase the building. Although she admittedly knew little about gardening, her business partner, Toby, had always wanted to open a nursery. She added that her husband’s experience in construction was helpful in developing the landscaping aspect of the business.

“We’re always looking for new opportunities to grow ourselves and grow our business,” she said. “This opportunity presented itself and we took it. So far, we’re having a lot of fun with it.”

Lincoln Green Garden Center sells landscaping and gardening items including seeds, plants, trees, flowers, bulk landscaping materials and hanging baskets.

The business is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends. They can be reached by calling 360/410-6818. Their grand opening is Saturday, April 23 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with hot dogs and hamburgers and demonstrations by a chainsaw carver.
