Commuters who use the local 55X bus will want to arrive 20 minutes earlier beginning June 12.

During a regular meeting last week, Whatcom Transportation Authority board members voted 9-0 to make numerous changes to route 55X, which services Blaine and Birch Bay. The changes will reschedule the first daily trip from Blaine to Bellingham to 20 minutes earlier than its current departure time and expand the route south to Alderson Road, change the route’s local on-demand service area to a fixed route.

The changes would also remove a section of Portal Way, just north of Ferndale, from the on-demand flex area, as well as the route along Portal Way between Grandview and Birch Bay-Lynden roads because of safety issues with large trucks. Flex service would still remain in those areas.
