The renovated gym at Bay Horizon Park is just a few finishing touches away from completion as parks and recreation district staff prepare to open the gym to the public in late April.

Ted Morris, president of Northwest Park & Recreation District 2, said the district will host an open house at the gym from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, to introduce the community to the new amenities. District staff are also seeking instructors and activity coordinators to staff the gym once it is up and running, Morris noted.

The parks district has also purchased new basketballs, volleyballs and a variety of other sports equipment for use at the gym.
The community center adjacent to the gym will also be available to rent for community events and private parties.

The district leases the land and the building from Whatcom County Park & Recreation. The renovation cost approximately $150,000, paid by taxes collected from the 2007 parks levy. The gym renovation is the largest district 2 project to date.

“I think it’s money well spent, and that the community will be able to enjoy it for generations to come,” Morris said.

The gym will provide the community with a place to play indoor sports, such as volleyball and basketball. Morris said the open house will also allow the community to comment on how the gym could be used for activities other than sports.
