The Blaine Senior Activity Center has been enjoying the winter with an abundance of indoor activities, good food and fellowship. Winter is the time for good food and warm friendships. The center is all of this with many pleasant faces and friendly hands.
January brought us an abundance of rain and some days of brilliant sunshine. Now, fabulous February is flying in, flinging itself between a chilling January and a triumphing March. Soon we will be welcoming the renewal of Spring.
February is a month to be celebrated. It is short, but filled with special days. Why not just celebrate every day of February? That’s right, make every day a holiday made for celebration.
Come celebrate with us, celebrate the passing of the seasons and wonderful friends. February is freedom month, so revel in the wonder of America and the freedom we have. February is also heart month, may our hearts be ever willing and strong.
The Blaine Senior Center is celebrating by hosting some very special February events and classes in addition to the regular ongoing class and activities:
Sign up now for AARP Tax preparation. Call 332-8040 or come to the center to schedule this free service and pick up your packet of preparation information.
On Tuesdays and Wednesdays you may choose from our three daily fresh options, a hot menu item of the day, a ready-made entrée salad or a fresh deli sandwich served with a small side salad. Mondays and Thursdays we offer our daily hot menu item.
On Fridays come visit our full salad bar. Include with your salad a made-to-order sub sandwich or a cup of the soup of the day to complete your meal.
The new salad bar will keep food fresher and be a healthier method of serving salads and fruit.
Thursday, February 10: 12:30 p.m. Featuring the Dusty Road String Band. It is always a treat to see and listen to them.
Friday, February 11: 12:30 p.m., movie and popcorn, featuring “Funny Valentine.”
Saturday, February 12: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sweet Breads Class for Valentines Day. Ron Snyder will teach students how to make sweet artisan bread. The fee will be $10 for the class and is payable at registration.
Tuesday, February 15: Blaine Chamber of Commerce events for 2011. Tall ships in Blaine Harbor! We will hear an update on all the exciting events coming up this year from Caroll Solomon manager of the chamber, you don’t want to miss it.
Thursday, February 17: Genealogy information by Sharon Neem. Sharon has been teaching our weekly genealogy class. Find out how they are uncovering fascinating information about their family trees. Family history has become second only to gardening as a hobby of the American people.
Wednesday, February 16: 12:30 p.m. come play BINGO with us.
Saturday, February 19: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. pancake breakfast. Waffles, pancakes, eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, orange juice, coffee. Cost of the breakfast is adults $5, kids $4.
Friday, February 18: 12:30 p.m. offers movie and popcorn, “Ellis Island.” This is a memorial to America’s busiest immigration processing center.
Monday, February 21: The center will be closed for President’s Day.
Thursday, February 24, 12:30 p.m. Matt Audette will be here to sing country favorites and gospel.
Friday, February 25: Shannon Freeman sings classics from the 1940s, show tunes, etc. Shannon is a senior at Blaine high school.
Remember that the strength training room is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and also Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All those who use the gym must be a current member and have taken a Whatcom County Parks 10-week strength training class.
Start saving now, the Blaine Senior Center Rummage Sale is Saturday, April 30.
Have you seen the new open sign? The sign is to let you know if the center is open. The sign will indicate that the sidewalks are cleared of ice and safe.
Updates about the board will be posted monthly across from the reception desk. The colorful and informational bulletin board showing each day’s planned activities is adjacent to it.
