The Mount Baker Ski Area is now open, and forecasts call for even more snow to blanket the mountain.

The drive to the ski area takes about an hour and one half to two hours from northwest Whatcom County, depending on traffic and road conditions. Daily reports on snow conditions can be checked through the ski area’s website.

Prices for lift tickets are less expensive on non-holiday weekdays than weekends and holidays. The adult price during the week is $43 per lift ticket and $49.50 on weekends and holidays. Prices are cheaper for those under 15 and older than 60.

The ski area also offers a number of classes for everyone from beginners to those looking to hone their skills on the slopes.

First, the basics. The ski area offers a beginners package that offers small class sizes, quick rentals and lift chairs specifically designed for beginners. The classes include a 90-minute lesson, all-day equipment rental and a beginner lift ticket ($30).

The ski area’s instructors also offer intermediate courses and classes designed for those who want to improve their all-mountain skills. These classes range in price from $25 to $125, not including a lift ticket.

Classes start at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every day of operation. Participants must sign up at least one hour before each start time.
