In its regular meeting October 25, Blaine City Council has approved a $43,000 amendment to a design contract with Reichhardt & Ebe to develop a new street segment on the south side of the former municipal airport.

The project, approved October 25, would add a new, short public street off the southeast side of the Boblett connector road and will include pedestrian walkways and storm water and utility improvements to that area.

Reichhardt & Ebe already have a contract with the city to develop  the binding site plan for the 33 acres of former airport property now known as the Blaine Gateway.

The  project would bring the total contract cost to about $350,000.

Blaine public works director Steve Banham said while the work is not budgeted in the 2010 budget, the project would be paid through a residential street capital projects fund and reimbursed after the sale the airport property.

Banham said the city is also pursuing an economic development investment grant (EDI) or loan in the amount of $375,000 for the construction of Boblett Court in 2011.

Mercer Distribution, a Fife-based company that provides importing, exporting and warehousing services, offered $669,375 for the property in October.

Blaine city manager Gary Tomsic said Mercer will take the next few months to determine what needs to be done to establish a business on the property.
