 Local residents Bruce and Billie Rowell won first place in the 25th annual Whatcom County in Bloom competition for their private, residential garden and the Bellingham Beauty School’s Best Backyard Award. The competition is sponsored by the Whatcom County Parks and Recreation Department and recognizes gardens maintained by residents, businesses and organizations in Whatcom County. Pictured from left to right are: Michael McFarlane, director of Whatcom County Parks; Billie and Bruce Rowell, of Blaine; and Whatcom County executive Pete Kremen. Other local winners were Bruce Wolf, of Blaine, who earned second place for his residential garden, third place for his container garden and the Haggen/ Top Food & Drug award for best small garden; Birch Bay Leisure Park, which earned second in the individual business category; and the Semiahmoo Resort Association, which earned third place for entrance with a sign.
