Potential zoning changes could limit development in several areas near Blaine and Birch Bay if the Whatcom County Council approves a resolution currently in the works.
The council discussed several rural zoning changes during the September 14 work session, which was ordered by the state Supreme Court last December after an anti-sprawl group Futurewise challenged the county’s zoning laws.
The proposed changes are designed to keep rural areas rural and prevent urban sprawl. Part of that downzoning would include an area north of Loomis Trail Road along Portal Way near Blaine and several lots along Birch Bay-Lynden Road, which would be reduced from two houses per acre to one house per five acres.
The council will be schedule a public meeting in the coming weeks.
