A handicapped man in Birch Bay is homeless after his home was destroyed in a fire Friday, September 3.

North Whatcom Fire & Rescue division chief Jeff Hoftstead said firefighters received a report of a single-wide mobile home on fire at 8080 Harborview Drive in the Birch Bay Trailer Park around 6:20 a.m.

Hofstead said units arrived within 10 minutes although firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames, the home was destroyed by smoke damage.

There were no reported injuries and officials were unable to provide the value of the home and its contents. Hoftstead said investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.

Officials with the Mt. Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross said they provided the man with a storage container, financial resources for food, clothing and shoes as well as a comfort kit containing personal hygiene items.

The man will stay with family until he can find social service assistance for an affordable place to live.
