Welcome to the Blaine school district and the 2010-11 school year. We are looking forward to an exciting and productive year for students in each of our schools and programs!
We employ one of the most skilled and dedicated group of professionals in the state of Washington. Teachers and support staff strongly desire to work in Blaine and many choose to spend their entire career in our district. We see this as a clear tribute to the overall quality of the program and the commitment that we make to supporting staff in their work with our students.
Improving student learning at every level of the system remains at the heart of our mission. Our students consistently demonstrate outstanding academic performance, comparing favorably to other districts across the state.
For the past four years, Blaine high school has been recognized by “Newsweek” as one of the top 1300 high schools in the Nation. A substantially high level of student participation in Advanced Placement (AP) courses serves as a key factor in this recognition. Students do not achieve success at the high school level without a strong K-8 foundation. We are privileged to have excellent K-12 administrators, teachers and support personnel who demonstrate a consistent commitment to making a difference for young people at all levels of the program.
These remain very unique and challenging economic times. The demands being placed upon school districts, specific to declining state and federal revenue, are unprecedented. In preparation for the new school year, we have been committed to the continued ownership of staff and community in the process of establishing key system priorities.
One of the priorities recently identified by the board of directors will involve the presentation of a Capital Projects Bond Initiative to voters in April of 2011. The board believes that it is essential that long overdue comprehensive facility work be completed at Blaine high school, as well as a limited number of smaller projects across the district campus. We look forward to sharing much more information about this initiative with our collective communities in the months ahead.
As I now begin my fifth year in the role of superintendent in the Blaine school district, I remain impressed with the extensive level of community ownership and involvement that I see at all levels of the program. The communities of Blaine, Point Roberts and Birch Bay take great pride in the learning that takes place in their schools and most importantly in the ongoing growth and success of students.
The employees of the Blaine school district realize how important it is to keep parents and patrons informed of key events and issues across all grade levels. To that end, we hope that you will find an opportunity to visit the Blaine school district at www.blainesd.org often, where you can learn about opportunities to stay connected to activities involving our students.
On behalf of the board of directors, and the staff of the Blaine school district, thank you for your continued support to the vitally important work of educating all students.
We are looking forward to a great year!
