Blaine Harbor will be a hive of activity Thursday, January 21 as federal, state and local personnel and volunteers conduct a drill in preparation for the 2010 Olympic and Para-Olympic Games, to be held beginning February 12. Infection Detection 2010 will test operational readiness for conducting health screening at local crossings.

Olympic organizers expect thousands of visitors to cross the border during February and March to attend events in Vancouver and the drill will identify logistical, communications or operational requirements should an incident occur during the games that has the potential for a significant impact on the local medical system or community public health.

The drill organizers hope to discover any challenges associated with conducting such an activity as volunteer “border-crossers” transit through the border and are directed to medical screening stations.

Agencies include the Whatcom County Health Department, Whatcom Unified Emergency Management, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, city of Blaine, Whatcom CERT, and the American Red Cross.
