A Blaine woman is helping to direct donations to an orphanage in Haiti following a magnitude 7 earthquake that killed an estimated 72,000 people January 12.
Sherry Shawe said she wants people to donate to the 3 Angels Relief organization that operates a Christian orphanage, school and medical compound near Port au Prince, Haiti, where her niece, Abbey McArthur, 25, was working at the time.
McArthur, a resident of Fishers, Indiana, had been volunteering at a Christian-based orphanage there when the earthquake hit and helped the children who were in the building at the time make it out safely. Amazingly, neither McArthur, the orphanage staff or the 26 children housed there were injured.
That news, however, didn’t come until nearly two days after the quake hit because McArthur didn’t have access to a phone that could make international calls. Finally, a staff worker at another nearby Christian school was able to send a text message to McArthur’s mother in Indiana to let her know she was OK. She said they were uninjured but that they needed to find a place for the children to stay that night.
“My sister and I were emailing back and forth trying to figure out how we can find out something,” Shawe said. “It was awful. All I could think of was Abbey’s mother having to go through that. I couldn’t imagine not having her around.
“People in a lot of states have been praying for Abbey. We’ve been on our knees a lot the last several days. For us, it’s just been a real miracle.”
From there, Shawe said McArthur was able to get the children to the Quisqueya Christian School a few blocks away where they camped that night. Some of children who were awaiting adoption were expedited through U.S. Customs and Immigration into the United States where they were taken into foster homes, she said. McArthur is now home in Indiana.
Shawe, however, added that donations of money and medical supplies are still needed. To make a donation, visit threeangelsrelief.org
