Senior center releases holiday cookbook

The Blaine community and senior center has scheduled the release of their new cookbook to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the incorporation of the city of Blaine.

Weighing in at 254 pages, the book offers tried-and-true favorites as well as local photographs from early Blaine and newspaper clippings from the Blaine Journal of 1890. Cost is $12 and copies will be available starting December 4 at the center’s Christmas bazaar. All proceeds will benefit the Blaine community and senior center. For more information, call 332-8040.

Local author hosts book signing Dec. 12

Dick Vander Yacht will be signing his latest Western adventure book at Pacific Building Center on Saturday, December 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2677 Bell Road in Blaine.
The book, “Follow The Sun” is Vander Yacht’s third adventure western and humorously weaves together the lives of law enforcement, homesteaders and ranchers based on true stories and historical events of the 1800s. For more information, call 332-5335 or 306-8666.

Gift wrapping event to benefit choir trip

The Blaine high school chamber choir are holding two fund raisers for their singing tour to New York City next May where they will perform at The Festival of Music. The trip includes choir clinics at St. Bartholomew’s Church, Jacqueline Onassis Reservoir in Central Park, Ground Zero/World Trade Center and St. Paul’s Chapel (where George Washington attended church when the capital was in New York). They will also hear the world famous St. Patrick’s Cathedral choir perform during services at the iconic Madison Avenue church.

Choir members will provide gift-wrapping services in the old Goff’s Department store during WinterFest from 5 to 9 p.m. December 4, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. December 5 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. December 6, 12, 13, 19, 20.

Local stores raise money for food banks

Local supermarkets are partnering with Food For All to raise money for local food banks during the holiday season. Participating stores include Cost Cutter in Blaine, The Market at Birch Bay Square and other Whatcom County stores. The stores have coupons for $1, $3 and $5 at the checkstands. Customers may also add a tax-deductible coupon to their grocery order each time they shop, with the donations going to the Bellingham Food Bank, Lighthouse Mission, Project Hope, Ferndale Food Bank and the Blaine Food Bank this holiday season.
The fundraiser runs November 20 through January 2, with the funds being distributed in January.
