Homeowners wanting to perform their own septic system inspections will want to attend a class offered by Whatcom County Health Department this month.

The classes will certify homeowners to perform their own inspections over the long-term. The next class is scheduled for 1 p.m. October 29 at the North Whatcom Fire Station #61 at 9408 Odell Road in Blaine. County officials say additional classes will be scheduled to meet the demand.

As of April 2, 2007, homeowners are required to have an operation and maintenance evaluation once every three years for conventional gravity systems and annually for all other systems.

Whatcom County Health Department environmental health supervisor Kyle Dodd said the classes are being offered in response to the large number of individuals who expressed interest in doing the inspections themselves, saving an estimated $150 to $300 per year for systems with pumps.

Dodd added that the first inspection is required to be performed by a professional.

Each class is limited to 50 people and pre-registration is required. To register or for more information, call 360/676-6724.
