Whatcom County Council last week approved a six-year transportation plan that puts long needed Lincoln Road improvements on track for 2011. Birch Bay residents have been vocal in their calls for the county to make Lincoln Road a higher priority in the road plan.

Council also approved the inclusion, without funding, of a pedestrian pathway along most of Birch Bay Drive from Harborview Road south to the Terrell Creek bridge, a move that makes the project eligible to apply for funding via state and federal grants.

The transportation plan budgets $17 million for projects in 2010 and 2011, a $2.5 million reduction from the six-year plan passed last year. Washington state funding to the tune of $500,000 will be earmarked for the Lincoln Road project beginning in June, 2011. Improvements will be to the half-mile section between Blaine and Shintaffer roads. The pedestrian path is slated for 2014. The transportation plan can be accessed on the county web site www.co.whatcom.wa.us.
