Blaine incumbent Charlie Hawkins will face off against political newcomer John George in a race for Blaine City Council ward 2, position 4.
Early election results released by the Whatcom County Auditor’s office said that Hawkins has a healthy lead over George with 66 percent of the vote.
George, a Blaine resident and owner of the Ladies’ Diamond Poker Club business in the state of Nevada, earned 20 percent.
David Gallion, who currently serves on the city’s planning commission, came in third with 13 percent of the vote. Hawkins, a life-long resident of Blaine and former salmon fisher, said he was happy about the results but was cautious about celebrating too early.
“People know who I am, I am going to let their vote speak for me in November,” he said. “But I'm happy. It shows people in the second ward know who I am.”
At the county level, incumbent council member Laurie Caskey-Schreiber will challenge Bill Knutzen in the November election, pulling ahead with 45.28 percent of the vote while Knutzen had 44.29 percent. Challenger Dave Pros garnered 10 percent.
