A 10-year dream will come to fruition for a local couple next month.

Joe and Jeanie Luna, of Blaine, have been scheduled to complete a two-year mission trip in St. Petersburg, Russia through their church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saint of Blaine in Ferndale.

“This is a goal we have been working on for many years and we’re really excited it’s coming to fruition for us,” she said. “It’s not just about the travel, we want to also give back to serve God amongst our brothers and sisters in Russia. We’re really excited our goal has been met.”

After completing two weeks training in Provo, Utah, they will leave August 14 to serve as an office specialist for the mission president in the St. Petersburg, Russia mission office.

Jeanie is a former office manager for The Northern Light and Joe is a former manager at Conoco-Phillips Refinery in Ferndale.

Jeanie will work in the mission office, helping coordinate and oversee missionaries and accommodations while Joe will be helping with finances.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing the cultural and historical sites there, we’ll have free time where we can see the area and visit. We will also visit Estonia every 90 days where we will renew our visas. We’re really excited.”

Luna said she looks forward to having a better understanding of Russian culture and be able to bring some of that experience home to help better associate with people of Russian descent in the local community.
