Individuals wanting to lend a hand at the 2009 Washington State Math Championship needn’t be math whizzes.
event, sponsored by the ConocoPhillips Ferndale refinery, is scheduled
for Saturday, April 18 at the Blaine schools campus. Volunteers are
needed to serve as proctors and test correctors.
More than 1,200 fifth through eighth graders from more than 70 schools across Washington are registered to compete.
Proctors ensure teams are in the correct classroom, explain and enforce rules, and read mental math test questions aloud to the competitors. Proctors start with an orientation at 8:15 a.m. and supervise a classroom from 9:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
Proctors are not allowed to answer specific questions and do not need math skills. Approximately 60 proctors are needed.
Correctors check answers on more than 2,000 tests that will be taken. Correctors receive their orientation at 9:30 a.m. and serve until all tests are corrected or about 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided for all proctor and corrector volunteers.
