The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) recently selected Blaine elementary school as a recipient of their STARS program that recognizes a school’s total physical education offerings.

To earn the STARS distinction, physical education staff submit a 10-pound portfolio of narrative evidence compiled over a year. The portfolio is reviewed by an independent panel of judges from around the country. Only 40 schools in the nation have earned STARS status.

Blaine elementary school and physical education teacher Dan Persse will be honored Friday, April 3 during the national convention of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) in Tampa, Florida.

Persse has developed the school’s physical education program based on Washington State Standards in Health and Fitness and is augmented by NASPE’s National Standards for Physical Education.

He is a 2008 NASPE District Physical Education Teacher of the Year, a NSCA certified personal trainer, a certified athletic trainer and a National Board Certified teacher.
