Dive into a new year at Birch Bay

Those who want to make a big splash in the coming year may take the challenge literally with Birch Bay’s annual Polar Bear Plunge.
The event is scheduled for noon, January 1 at Birch Bay, across the street from CJ’s Beach House Restaurant at 7878 Birch Bay Drive. Admission is free and hot beverages will be provided for participants. Commemorative t-shirts are available for $15.
Lisa Guthrie, president of of the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce, said awards will be given in categories: for oldest, youngest, best costumed individual, and best costumed group. A new category will also honor the individual who has participated in the event for the most consecutive years. Judging will begin at 11:30 a.m. Lynn Roberts of KAFE radio will be present to emcee the event and broadcast from the event.
The Ring of Fire & Hope is scheduled for 7 p.m. December 31 at Birch Bay Visitor Center at 7900 Birch Bay Drive. Participants should bring their own flares or pick some up at 6 p.m. for a small donation.
