Giving Tree fundraiser next Saturday

The Good Samaritan Society/ Stafholt is looking for donations for its annual Giving Tree program that matches low-income children with gifts in the Blaine, Birch Bay and Point Roberts communities.
The center has scheduled a concert with Blaine jazz and rock band Crystal Tricycle to raise money for the program from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m., November 22 at the Pastime bar.
Tickets are available for a suggested $10 donation at the Pastime, and Goff’s Department Store, as well as Stafholt at 456 C Street.
Marsha Hawkins, program coordinator for Stafholt, said volunteers are also still collecting tags for 694 gifts for 112 families already signed up to receive gifts, although she expects that number to at least double.
Last year, the center collected more than 1,720 gifts for 183 families. Those gifts were either donated or purchased by the center directly.
“When the gifts come in, we check them all off and if there are any gifts that are left unpurchased, we go out and purchase those gifts. Last year, Stafholt purchased about $3,000 worth of gifts.”
The program accepts applications for families with children under 18 to receive up to three gifts per child. Hawkins suggests one toy and two articles of clothing kept under $30.
Hawkins said donors are also able to donate cash or sponsor an entire family if they wish.
“It’s sometimes easier for us to match the appropriate gift to the appropriate child when people donate cash,” she said.
Gift tags are available at most Blaine businesses including Cost Cutter, Goff’s Department Store, Whatcom Educational Credit Union (WECU) and Busy B & Company.
Donations may also be mailed to the Good Samaritan Society/ Stafholt 456 C Street. Checks should be made out to “Blaine Chamber of Commerce.” For more information, call 332-8733.
