Council extends airport sale review

Blaine City Council approved a request last week that would allow the prospective buyers of the city’s airport property to have more time for review.
In a special meeting last Thursday, Blaine City Council voted 6-0 to approve the resolution giving Gateway LLC, a joint venture between TC Trading owner Tom Hayes and Blaine dentist Patrick Rooney, an additional 12 days to create an environmental review and binding site plan to detail what types of activities and infrastructure they plan for the property.
Blain Hardy, a Bellingham real-estate broker representing Gateway, said Thursday that his clients needed the extra time to negotiate either a lease or sale with the owner of Yorky’s gas station on the corner of Boblett Street and SR 543.
“An additional 12 days would give us a sufficient amount of time to formulate a plan that’s best for all of us, and especially for the residents of Blaine,” he said.
After that, they will need to put down $100,000 in earnest payment if they wish to pursue the sale. According to the purchase agreement, Gateway made an offer of $5,976,500 in mid-March.
