Drayton Harbor Road to open June 9
By Jack Kintner
Drayton Harbor Road will re-open to traffic on Monday, June 9, according to project manager Chris Brueske of Whatcom County Public Works.
“I know it’s actually been several years since the road closed, but we’re pretty much on time in terms of having started this restoration in November, and we’re within our budget,” he said of the $1.2 million project.
All that’s left, Brueske said, is for Birch Bay Water and Sewer District workers to finish putting in a waterline, something that has had some minor delays, and then the road will be paved from Shintaffer Road west to Harbor View on June 2 and 3, weather permitting.
A June “pineapple express” soaked the area on Tuesday and Wednesday putting the county’s timeline in doubt.
Brueske was not available for comment before press time, but said earlier that “If we get a break in the weather and get out striping done then we’ll be ready on the ninth.” Brueske also said that there were no plans to have a ribbon cutting at this time. “It will be a quiet opening,” he said.
