School board lays off nine classified staff

The Blaine school board voted Tuesday to lay off nine of the district’s 120 classified staff in response to this year’s budget crunch.
Seven work in the classroom, one in the cafeteria and one is a part-time secretary.
“As per their collective bargaining agreement, these individuals will be the first to be rehired if the circumstances permit,” said superintendent Ron Spanjer, “and while we certainly regret that this is necessary, this is a prudent move, and one we have to take no later than May 28 according to union rules.”
Spanjer said that the employees will go into a re-employment pool and that some could be back as early as September. “We’re continuing to look for dollars in the budget,” he said.
Board members also honored fourth grade teacher Kathy Tennyson as teacher of the year, and heard from state pole vault champ Robin Taylor, a Blaine high school sophomore, who broke her own state record by three inches at last weekend’s state meet in Tacoma.
