Obama, Huckabee are Blaine caucus choices

By Jack Kintner

Senator and presidential hopeful Barack Obama outpolled Senator Hillary Clinton in all of them except central Blaine where they tied.
An estimated 700 or more Democrats from nine Blaine area voting precincts jammed the American Legion hall in Birch Bay last weekend, caucusing to help decide which presidential candidate the state’s delegation will support.

Republican voters met at the Custer School, and while individual precinct results were not available the entire county’s Republican caucus vote supported Governor Mike Huckabee with 32.7 percent of the vote, followed by Congressman Ron Paul with 24.1 percent, Senator John McCain with 19.9 percent and Governor Mitt Romney with 8.6 percent. The rest (14.7 percent) were uncommitted.

Democratic precinct committee officer Ronda Fleming said that in the last presidential election year, 2004, she had 48 people show up for precinct 102, “but this time there were 138. Lots and lots of people came out, and our group eventually had to move upstairs to make room. It was really exciting.”

Meeting by precinct, voters elected delegates to the next level of caucuses that are organized around legislative voting districts. Each candidate’s share of elected delegates was proportional to the amount of support each candidate received from the entire precinct.

Although primary ballots were also sent out to area voters, the Democrats won’t use them in determining which candidates to support. Republicans from the same precincts met at the Custer School, and will determine which candidate to support based on a combination of primary voting results and caucus results.

The results by delegates elected by the Democrats in the nine Blaine area precincts that met at the legion hall were Precinct 102 (Semiahmoo-Birch Bay), Clinton 7, Obama 8; Precinct 103 (E. Birch Bay), Clinton 3, Obama 4, Undecided 1; precinct 105 (Delta NW of Lynden), Clinton 1 Obama 2; precinct 106 (Custer East of Birch Bay), Clinton 3, Obama 5; precinct 107 (Delta, Woodland-Sunrise), Clinton 1, Obama 3; Precinct 109 (So. Birch Bay Cherry Pt.), Clinton 3, Obama 8; Precinct 301 (No. of G St), Clinton 3, Obama 5; Precinct 302 (G St. to spit), Clinton 3, Obama 3; Precinct 303 (So. of Cedar), Clinton 2, Obama 5.
