Coast Guard suspends search for Birch Bay man

By Jack Kintner

A search for a missing Birch Bay man was suspended last Sunday evening by the U.S. Coast Guard for Robin Schuurman, 48, of Birch Bay Village.

Schuurman was last seen Saturday morning as he launched his boat at 6 a.m.

The boat, a 24-foot pleasure craft named the Sea Quest, was spotted earlier Sunday after it ran aground on the north end of Lummi Island, near Bellingham.

Schuurman’s family had earlier reported him missing, and said on Tuesday that they still had no word.

An HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Group Port Angeles and a small boat crew from the U.S. Coast Guard Station Bellingham assisted in the search.

According to Lt. Renee McKinnon at the Thirteenth Coast Guard District command center in Seattle, searches are normally not resumed unless more information can be provided.

Anyone with information that could aid in the search should contact the U.S. Coast Guard’s command center at 206/220-7001.
