D Street overpass now open to traffic
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has finished most of the Highway 543 improvements from H Street north to the border and has reopened lanes this month, helping to alleviate traffic snarls that have affected local traffic for more than a year as the $35 million project has been underway.
Two new northbound lanes opened this week north of D Street that were separating trucks from auto traffic and sending them east to their crossing and enlarged waiting facility. The D Street overpass also opened this week after being closed over a year.
Later this month crews will open both southbound and all three northbound lanes north of H Street on Highway 543. Opening the four on and off ramps that connect the D Street overpass to H Street is still a few months away, according to WDOT spokesman Dustin Terpening.
A grand opening is planned for the site on December 5 at noon that will be attended by Governor Christine Gregoire as well as city and county officials.
