Program encourages pregnant smokers to quit

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) is offering a new hotline for women who wish to stop smoking while pregnant. Katie Gilliam, a spokesperson for the department said the new program “Quit for You Quit for Two,” is designed to decrease tobacco use among pregnant and postpartum women.

Currently, one in 10 women in Washington state smokes while pregnant. In Whatcom County, the rate is 7.4 percent, she said.
Over the next several months, information about the dangers of smoking while pregnant and the Washington State Tobacco Quit Line (1-800-QUIT-NOW or 1-800-784-8669) will be distributed through health clinics and in advertising. More information can be found at www.quitline.com.
