Blaine program awards beautiful yards

By Jack Kintner

A Blaine committee headed by Debbie Harger, Blaine’s community and tourism development coordinator, has begun awarding weekly “yard of the week” prizes to Blaine residents as a way of recognizing efforts at helping to beautify the city.

“The idea is to reward people who are doing a lot to keep their yards beautiful,” Harger said.

Her committee includes June Auld, Sue Cushman, Jill Stephens, Kathleen Capson, Lauri Hart and Bruce Wolf.

Rose fanciers Doloress Sobjack and John Nunemaker were the first winners, announced May 31, for their large yard at 1260 Harrison. The second week’s winners (June 7) were Phil and Judy Lemon, long-time renters at 362 E street.

This week, the committee chose Frank and Rhonda Bresnan’s spacious tree-covered yard at 840 Odell Rd.

Harger said the committee welcomes nominations from the public. To nominate a yard or for more information, call Harger at 543-9982 or fill out an online form at
