Blaine church hires Rozendaal

By Jack Kintner

The reverend Jay Rozendaal was installed last Tuesday evening as vicar of Christ Episcopal Church in Blaine by his bishop, the Rt. Reverend Vincent Warner of the Episcopal diocese of Olympia.
Rozendaal, 44, is a native of Michigan and prior to seminary was assistant conductor of the Seattle Opera Company. He graduated from the General Theological Seminary in New York in 2002 and was ordained the following January at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle. He has been serving at Christ Episcopal Church in Blaine since last October and in January was appointed vicar by Bishop Warner, who presided at his installation.

Christ Episcopal Church, which began as a house gathering in the 1890s, completed an extensive addition to their building at 382 Boblett Street last year.

“When I began last fall we were still having our coffee hours in the old parish room,” Rozendaal said, “because we still didn’t have furniture for the new parish hall.” That was quickly remedied, however, and the growing congregation now puts both rooms to a variety of uses.

Rozendaal, who also teaches voice in the school of music at Western Washington University, said that his first priority is for the congregation’s long-range planning group to come up with some new ways to do community outreach in Blaine. “We don’t yet have a website, for example, and should have one,” Rozendaal said.

For the next few weeks he plans office hours on Thursdays at the church. For more information or to contact father Rozendaal, call the church at 332-4113.
