Student singers named to honor choirs

By Jack Kintner

Kholt Moore, Michelle Berry and Ashley Thomas have been selected to sing in regional honor choirs after submitting recorded vocal auditions.

Moore, a senior who sings tenor, will sing with the All-Northwest Mixed Choir in the Rose Garden Convention Center’s Grand Hall in Portland on February 18.

Berry and Thomas will sing with the Washington All-State Choir on March 25 in the Fieldhouse at the University of Puget Sound. Berry is a freshman soprano and Thomas is a senior alto.

To qualify, the students were assigned a series of warm-up exercises and then sang an a capella (without musical accompaniment) solo, this year the song “America, the Beautiful.”

The exercises and the song were recorded in Blaine and sent to a jury who selected 300 students for the six-state all northwest choir and another 275 students for the all-state choir out of more than 4,500 auditions submitted.

“To put this into perspective,” said choir director and Blaine high school music teacher Andy Harmening, “imagine being picked for an all-state team in your sport, and then being selected to be on a six-state regional all-star team.”
