Buy local, glean local
The Whatcom County Gleaners Pantry has scheduled a craft fair featuring live music, food and locally made arts and crafts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday at the Peace Arch State Park.
Some of the many handcrafted items will include local photography, soy candles, quilts, gift baskets, jewelry, soap and lotion products from “Bunny Toes.”
The organization, formerly known as Second Harvest Gleaners, started in 2001 and provides reclaimed food from Whatcom County fields and grocery stores to individuals regardless of income, said Deborah Wolfe, the organization’s donations director.
Wolfe said the organization also offers individualized education in gardening, recycling and food preservation such as canning, freezing and dehydrating.
The Pizza Factory, VanWingerden Greenhouses in Blaine and the staff at the Peace Arch State Park, have donated goods and services to the event. Pizza and soda will be available for $1.
The Whatcom County Gleaner’s facility is located at the old Evergreen produce stand on 6729 Enterprise Road in Ferndale.
Their food distribution hours are 9 a.m. Monday, 4 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m. Saturday. For more information, call 371-8280 or 366-7298.
