Blaine woman opens sports store

Kristin Clausen comes from a sports oriented family. The 1992 Lynden Christian grad’s dad Gary has been Blaine’s athletic director for many years, and she, herself, went to work for Pro Stock athletic in Bellingham nine years ago.

Clausen left there earlier this year, and along the way also became engaged to a Texan named Lamont Crayton. They’ve set next January 27 as their date, “and now it’s all this little stuff,” she said.

She opened Sports Unlimited next to Blaine’s Cost Cutter Grocery on H Street last August after spending a lot of time cleaning up and changing the 3,000 square foot former Payless Shoe store.

Clausen hired two well-known locals, former Meridian athletic director Steve Miller and Sean Linville whose parents once owned the Pro Stock store she worked in. She said she likes the location, too, since the store works with all the Whatcom County schools.

Basically, anything a student athlete needs for any team outside of golf and chess can be found here, including clothes and shoes by Reebok.
Some of the shoes look big enough to paddle around the bay. “I had a pair of size 15s,” she said, “that just sat here until I got a frantic call from a woman in Ferndale who said her son needed that size. And he’s just a sophomore!”

Sports Unlimited is located at 1685 H Street and is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 4 p.m. They can be reached by calling is 332-1628.
