Trio arrested in Birch Bay drive-by shooting

By Jack Kintner

Austin Markusen, 31, Daniel Cunningham, 22, and Jared Fullen, 25, were arrested last week at a house in the 4600 block of California Trail and remain in custody for their suspected roles in a drive-by shooting on Kickerville Road just south of Loomis Trail Road last weekend.

According to Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo, a couple with small children in their car saw the suspect vehicle stopped on Kickerville Road at about 5:30 p.m. last Saturday evening. They started to make a U-turn when a suspect in the car that was stopped in the road fired several shots at them. No one was injured.

Markusen and Cunningham were inside the house on California Trail where deputies found the car at about 6 p.m. They were taken into custody but Fullen refused to cooperate. The Special Response Team was deployed and gassed the house, and Fullen was then taken into custody.

Quantities of methamphetamine were found on Fullen as well as in the house, along with a flare gun and a .38 caliber handgun. All three suspects remain in custody in the Whatcom County Jail.
