Whatcom County law enforcement steps up patrols

By Jack Kintner

Police departments throughout Whatcom County are cooperating on an enforcement project this summer aimed at arresting impaired drivers.

Called “13 is your unlucky number,” the program hires local police and sheriff’s deputies for extra road patrols each weekend from Sunday, July 9 through Labor Day. Last weekend, Whatcom County officers made 20 arrests for driving under the influence. Blaine’s involvement is dependent upon funding and staffing issues which do not currently allow for extra patrols, but the department hopes to participate in the future. In the meantime, according to Blaine police seargent Ryan King, “We will continue our daily local enforcement of DUI offenders.”

The project is being managed by Sergeant Steve Gatterman of the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, who said that the emphasis is timed to run from, “high school graduation parties through all the summer Canadian and American holidays to Labor Day weekend.”
